UnTemporary Horizon – Ernesto Morales

13 October - 24 November 2024

GART Arte Contemporanea gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ‘UnTemporary Horizon‘, the exhibition dedicated to the new and the most recent paintings created by the artist Ernesto Morales, which is being planned until 24 November 2024 in Langhe and Roero territories.

In 2022, the Argentinean artist first encountered these places with TIERRA, an inspiring exhibition that attracted more than 20,000 visitors from all over the world among silver clouds and magnetic forests. Two years later, Ernesto Morales returns to take us on a journey of discovery of expanding universes, boundless panoramas and ever-changing golden horizons.

Conceived as a large project extending in time and territory, the exhibition will allow the light of Morales’ art, in strong connection with that of nature, to flood the spaces of the ancient towers, castles and historic centres of the village of Barbaresco, Neive and Magliano Alfieri. There will be three appointments to the exhibitions that will punctuate the narrative – Thursday 29 August at 6 pm at the Barbaresco Tower, Saturday 12 October at the GART Arte Contemporanea gallery in Neive and Sunday 13 October at the Castle of Magliano Alfieri – which, from the hills of lower Piedmont, will lead Ernesto Morales, next end of November, before the entrance to the Rothko Museum in Latvia.

Curated by Francesca Carbone, the exhibition project will present in the various venues a selection of works that, opening up to philosophical as much as scientific investigation, have guided the artist in recent years to expand his technical and artistic studies on the temporal dimension and the luminous component of pictorial mediums. An ascending path through the skies of the world will lead visitors to explore the “Cosmos” paintings, arriving at the panoramic top floor of the Barbaresco Tower, while, new and previously unseen artworks created on the theme of “Light” will be presented at the headquarters of the GART Arte Contemporanea gallery in Neive. The ancient rooms of the tower of the Magliano Alfieri Castle will instead host pictorial installations, diptychs and large-format paintings.

“The exhibition, in its entirety,” explains Francesca Carbone, curator of the project and director of the GART Arte Contemporanea gallery, “will make it possible to explore the intimate analysis conducted on natural phenomena by the artist, in which the element of light, studied in both its microscopic and macroscopic aspects, becomes a pretext for activating a metalinguistic reflection on painting. In the new expressive grammar of Ernesto Morales, matured during his periods of residence in Langhe and in his new studio in Castiglione Tinella, surfaces become a field of formal deconstruction in which different planes merge, questioning compositional hierarchies through the creation of new timeless horizons and lyrical scenarios. ‘UnTemporary Horizon’ is an exhibition that, due to its having been conceived and designed in these particular historical and territorial junctures, becomes an opportunity to communicate the profound need to search for a place, both mental and physical, in which one can expand one’s horizons of being and time, demonstrating how artistic languages can evoke it, connect with it and, indirectly, celebrate it“.

Amongst a panorama of gentle waves and sinuous courses, which this year celebrates the tenth anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of the beauty generated by the union of nature and the hand of human, GART Arte Contemporanea, thanks to its relationship with the artists and the numerous realities of the territory, continues to proliferate art and culture, opportunities for exchange and social development. In a context to be discovered by practising slow life, marvelling at every reflection and nuance, contemporary art continues to shape and amplify the energy of an area capable of being a source of continuous inspiration.

Opening hours: Barbaresco Tower: open every day from 9 am to 8 pm. GART Contemporary Art: open Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Magliano Alfieri Castle: open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Portals that flood the eyes and space with light, opening up new and lyrical scenarios for the soul and thought.

Morales’ intention is not to provide an objective representation of a place, a horizon line, or a boundary, but rather to suggest its atmosphere.

His paintings, always born from an inspiration drawn from nature, have increasingly followed an evolution driven by the expansion of form, a multidirectional perspective, whether physical or of thought.

The collection on exhibit allows for the exploration of the intimate analysis conducted by the artist on natural phenomena, in which the element of light, studied in both its microscopic and macroscopic aspects, becomes a pretext to activate a metalinguistic reflection on painting. One of the most recent exhibitions by the Argentine painter was titled “As if it were Light.” Through this new series of paintings, I believe the paradigm can be reversed, suggesting that Ernesto Morales has here demonstrated his ability to use Light ‘as if it were paint.’

By varying the natural combination and composition of pigments, the reason behind these new works signed by Morales lies in their symbolic and metaphysical potential. Through compositions of formal deconstructions and expansions, luminous expanses unfold where every existence could potentially converge infinitely. Observing Ernesto’s new works “Light,” one may approach an intuition of immensity; for Treccani, an exceptional spatial or ideal realm that suggests the idea of the boundless and the infinitely large.

If, as Nietzsche suggested, in the moment time abandons its conception of duration, acquiring a dimension of depth and eternity, one could say that Morales seeks this ‘zero degree’ of time in the moment of interaction between light and painting, between nature and canvas, between time and space. In attempting to explore time, which is most dear to us, the artist reveals its eternal dimension, offering us conceptual spaces, suspended and in constant transformation. ‘UnTemporary Horizon’ is an exhibition that, having been conceived and designed in these particular historical and territorial moments, becomes an opportunity to communicate the profound need to search for a place, both mental and physical, where one can expand their horizons of being and time, demonstrating how artistic languages can evoke it, connect with it, and indirectly celebrate it.
