Jacopo Mandich

1979, Roma

Deeply attracted to the study of perception, Jacopo Mandich focuses his artistic research on human sensations provoked by the encounter with material. His sculptural language is generated by dualistic contrasts, paradoxical hybridisations, relational dimensions of matter in space, which resonate analogous to (extra)terrestrial phenomena. Unexpected harmonic contrasts, shifts of meaning, contraventions of the logic of materials happen before our eyes, incredulous and revitalised by the inexhaustible variety of images of the world.

Jacopo Mandich graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2005. In 2006, he won the Edgardo Mannucci International Sculpture Prize and continued to attend the biennial sculpture courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino and Turin, until 2015. He was then invited, as the first Italian artist, to the Ural Biennial in Russia alongside great artists such as Alfredo Jaar and Tino Sehgal. In 2018 he attended the Master of Sculpture Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany, and in 2019 he participated in #Atelier4 – Macro Asilo, curated by Giorgio de Finis at the Macro Museum in Rome. Over the years, his works have been shown in various important solo and group exhibitions.

His works claim to be a single identity, despite the multitude of opposing qualities and materialities within them: hardness and softness, heaviness and lightness, smooth and edgy, natural and artificial, permanent and ephemeral.

In Jacopo Mandich’s sculpture, the unconventional relationship between two elements is a poetic, oxymoronic act, concretised with the minimum and indispensable amount of material to achieve maximum imaginative openness. Truth in his work is not a deterministic statement, but an evocation of something that provokes observation, listening and reflective movement. The artist’s work thus does not propose an a priori predetermined context of meaning, but generates it. Reflection is conducted on the ambiguity of self-perception, natural logic, the sense of appearance and the paradoxes behind the creation of reality.
Thus Mandich’s poetic forms hold emotion close to the place where memory, sensitive knowledge and intuition remain poised, suspended in the moment before their eternal creation.
